Abstract

Background: The educational environment that students encounter affects their satisfaction with the course of study, perceived well-being, aspirations and academic results. Assessing students' perceptions of the learning environment in non-medical study programs using appropriate tools is therefore important and necessary. Aim: The aim of this study was to find out how students perceived the educational climate using the Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) and to compare the findings obtained at two universities in Slovakia (FZO PU Prešov) and in the Czech Republic (FZS UJEP Ústí nad Labem). Method: DREEM was distributed to a total of 742 students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of study in 2018 and 2019. Results: The total score of the DREEM questionnaire for FZO PU Prešov was 123.15±16.6 (out of 200), which is 62 % of the maximum possible score and the total score of the DREEM questionnaire for FZS Ústí nad Labem was 126.57±20.6 (of 200), which is 63 % of the maximum possible score. There were no significant differences between the Slovak Republic and the Czech Republic in the students' perception of the study environment. The perception was similar among students in each country. Conclusion: The study helped identify certain issues that require further research, such as a support system for students who are stressed, adequate social and academic support for non-medical students, effective mental health, and a counseling program.
