Abstract

Intravenous access is an important critical factor in the nursing care of paediatric patients. PICCs (peripherally implanted central catheters) are widely used in intensive care units to access the central venous system, however, procedures and standards of practice around PICC insertion and follow-up care vary. This review article outlines the practical procedures available in the current literature and is written with an educational purpose for healthcare professionals caring for children with a PICC catheter in place. The article covers indications and contraindications for PICC catheter insertion in children, insertion techniques, and complications associated with insertion and the inserted catheter (PICC). The characteristics of nursing care for invasive PICC catheter are discussed. Implementing current practices into highly professional catheter care will significantly improve patient safety and reduce complications.
